How to Extract Text From a PDF Free

Copy and extract all text content from a PDF document — free, no upload, works on any selectable PDF.

FixMyPDF's PDF to Text tool extracts all text content from a PDF as a plain text file — free, locally, without any upload.

Steps

Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/pdf-text. Upload your PDF. Click Extract Text. Download the plain text file with all extracted text content.

When Text Extraction Works

Text extraction works when the PDF has a text layer — meaning the text is stored as actual text data, not as an image. Most PDFs created from Word, Google Docs, or design software have a text layer. Scanned documents are image PDFs and do not have a text layer.

For Scanned Documents

If your PDF is a scan, the pages are images. Text cannot be extracted directly — OCR (optical character recognition) is required to convert the image text to actual text data. OCR requires server-side processing and is not available in browser-based tools.

Use Cases

Copying large amounts of text from a PDF for editing. Searching text content of a PDF in a text editor. Importing PDF content into a CMS or database. Checking the exact text content of a PDF for SEO or accessibility.
