Fix PDF Bookmarks Not Working or Missing

PDF bookmarks that don't navigate, are missing from the panel, or jump to the wrong page are caused by broken destinations or viewer panel settings. Here's how to restore them.

PDF bookmarks (the navigation panel showing chapters and sections) are optional — not all PDFs have them. When they exist but don't work, the issue is either the viewer isn't showing the panel, or the bookmark destinations are broken (pointing to pages that no longer exist after the PDF was edited).

Show the Bookmarks Panel

Bookmarks are hidden by default in most viewers. In Adobe Reader: View → Navigation Panels → Bookmarks (or press F5). In Chrome: click the bookmark icon in the toolbar that appears when hovering over the PDF. In Edge: click the panel icon on the left side of the PDF toolbar. If the bookmarks panel opens but is empty, the PDF has no bookmarks defined. If the panel shows bookmarks but clicking them doesn't navigate, the destinations are broken.

Fix Broken Bookmark Destinations

Broken bookmark destinations are almost always caused by editing the PDF after bookmarks were created — adding pages at the beginning, deleting pages, or reordering pages changes physical page numbers without updating bookmark targets. In Adobe Acrobat Pro: expand the Bookmarks panel, right-click a bookmark → Properties → Actions → shows the destination page. Update broken destinations by right-clicking → "Set Destination" while viewing the correct page. For many broken bookmarks, recreating them from scratch in the updated document is faster than fixing each individually.

Bookmarks Not Preserved After Merging or Splitting

Merging PDFs with FixMyPDF's merge tool preserves bookmarks from each source document and adjusts their destinations for the new combined page positions. However, some third-party merge tools drop bookmarks entirely. If you've just merged PDFs and lost bookmarks: check whether the merge tool has a "preserve bookmarks" or "include outlines" option. FixMyPDF's merge tool includes this by default.

Bookmarks in Browser Viewers

Browser PDF viewers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) show PDF bookmarks in a collapsible panel but have limited support for some bookmark types — specifically bookmarks with JavaScript actions or named destination bookmarks that reference external PDFs. If bookmarks work in Adobe Reader but not in your browser viewer, open the PDF in Reader for navigation. For web-distributed PDFs, test bookmark functionality in Chrome specifically to ensure recipients can navigate using the built-in browser viewer.
