Fix PDF Pages in Wrong Orientation — Landscape vs Portrait
Pages showing sideways, upside down, or in the wrong landscape/portrait orientation need rotation. Here's how to fix orientation permanently vs just for viewing.
PDF pages appearing sideways or upside-down have an incorrect rotation value set — either from scanning in the wrong direction, exporting from an application that didn't detect orientation correctly, or an accidental rotation applied by a PDF editor. The fix is either a permanent rotation of the page data or adjusting how the viewer displays it.
Viewer Rotation vs Permanent Rotation
Most PDF viewers let you rotate the view temporarily using Ctrl+Shift+R or View → Rotate View. This is a display-only change — the file isn't modified, and the rotation resets when you close and reopen the PDF. For a permanent fix that works in all viewers and when printing, you need to rotate the page data in the file itself. FixMyPDF's rotate tool makes permanent rotation changes — select the pages, choose the rotation direction (90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, or 180°), and save.
Fix Single Pages vs All Pages
Mixed-orientation documents (some landscape, some portrait) are common in reports that include spreadsheet printouts. In FixMyPDF's rotate tool: select specific page ranges to rotate rather than the entire document. If pages 5 and 6 are landscape and the rest are portrait, select only pages 5-6 for rotation. This gives you a consistently-oriented document without affecting the correctly-oriented pages.
Fixing Scanned Documents That Scan Sideways
The most common source of wrong orientation is scanning physical documents in landscape orientation on a scanner set to portrait (or vice versa). When scanning multi-page documents, ensure the physical paper matches your scanner's selected orientation. For existing sideways-scanned PDFs: use FixMyPDF's rotate tool to correct all pages at once. For future scans: use your scanner's "Auto-Rotate" or "Auto-Orient" feature if available — it detects page orientation from content and auto-corrects.
Rotation Not Sticking After Save
If you rotate pages in Adobe Reader and the rotation doesn't save: Reader's free version doesn't allow editing. When you rotate with View → Rotate View, it's a temporary display change. To save a rotation in Adobe Reader: Tools → Organise Pages → rotate the page, then File → Save. In Acrobat Pro, page rotation is a full edit. For users without Acrobat Pro, FixMyPDF's rotate tool provides the same permanent rotation capability in a browser, no subscription needed.
