How to Flatten PDF Annotations Free
Permanently embed annotations, highlights, and comments into a PDF so they cannot be removed. Free, browser-based.
PDF annotations (highlights, sticky notes, comments, drawings) are separate from the page content and can be removed or hidden by the recipient. Flattening merges them permanently into the page — they become part of the document image.
Why Flatten Annotations
When you send a reviewed document with annotations, the recipient can delete your comments before replying. Flattening prevents this — once flattened, annotations are part of the page and cannot be removed without destroying the underlying content.
Steps
Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/flatten-pdf. Upload the annotated PDF. Click Flatten. Download the flattened version — annotations are now part of the page image.
What Else Flattening Does
Flattening also removes interactive form fields (checkbox selections, text field entries become plain text), removes JavaScript actions, and removes signature fields. The result is a static, non-interactive document.
Before Archiving
Before archiving a reviewed document, flatten it to ensure annotations are preserved as part of the page content. PDF viewers that do not support annotations will still show the annotated content.
