How to Password Protect a PDF on iPhone (No App Download)

Add a password to a PDF on iPhone in Safari — no app, no account. Encrypt PDFs securely before sharing sensitive documents.

iOS doesn't have a built-in way to add passwords to PDFs, and most PDF protection apps require a subscription. FixMyPDF's protect tool adds AES encryption to any PDF directly in Safari on your iPhone — no app, no account, no cost.

Open the Protect Tool in Safari

In Safari on your iPhone, go to fixmypdf.in/tools/protect. Tap "Select PDF" to choose your document from the Files app. The tool loads instantly with a clean mobile interface.

Enter a Strong Password

Tap the password field and enter a strong password. Safari's built-in password suggestions (from iCloud Keychain) are excellent for this — tap "Use Strong Password" when Safari suggests one, and it'll be saved to your keychain so you can autofill it later when sharing access with yourself.

Set Permission Restrictions (Optional)

Beyond the open password, you can restrict what recipients can do: prevent printing, copying text, or editing. Toggle these options before applying protection. This is useful for sharing a contract that you want read-only, or a form that should only be filled but not modified.

Encrypt and Download

Tap "Protect PDF" and the encrypted PDF downloads to your iPhone's Downloads folder. Open Files → Browse → Downloads to find it. The file icon will show the lock symbol in some apps indicating it's password-protected.

Sharing the Password with Recipients

Send the password separately from the PDF — not in the same message or email. Best practice: share the PDF via email, then send the password via SMS or a different channel. Never include the password in the same email as the protected document.

Does AES Encryption Work on iPhone PDFs?

Yes — the encryption standard (128-bit or 256-bit AES) is the same regardless of device. A PDF encrypted on iPhone using our tool can be opened on Windows, Mac, Android, or any device — the recipient just needs the password and a PDF reader that supports encrypted PDFs (which all modern readers do).

Need to Remove the Password Later?

If you need to share an unprotected version, use our PDF unlock tool on iPhone — enter the password, click Unlock, and download the unprotected version. Or just share the password with the recipient so they can open the protected version directly.
