How to Remove PDF Password Without Adobe Acrobat (Free)
Remove PDF password restrictions without Adobe Acrobat Pro — free, browser-based, no subscription needed. Owner restrictions removed instantly.
Adobe Acrobat Pro can remove PDF password restrictions — but so can FixMyPDF, for free, in your browser. Owner password restrictions (no print, no copy, no edit) are removed instantly without entering any password.
What Acrobat Does vs FixMyPDF
In Acrobat Pro: open the PDF → Properties → Security → Change Settings → remove password. Our tool does the same through the web: upload → unlock → download. Same result, $0 cost difference.
How to Unlock Without Acrobat
Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/unlock. Upload your restricted PDF. Click "Unlock PDF". If it only has owner restrictions (opens without a password but blocks printing/copying), the restrictions are removed with no password needed. Download the unrestricted PDF.
Free Built-In Methods
Mac Preview: open the PDF, enter the open password if required, then File → Export as PDF — this sometimes strips owner restrictions depending on the PDF. Windows: no built-in unlock tool. Chrome: drag the PDF into Chrome, press Ctrl+P, choose "Save as PDF" — sometimes removes print restrictions.
Handling Open Passwords Without Acrobat
If the PDF requires a password to open (not just owner restrictions), enter that password when prompted by our tool. Once open, we re-export it without the password protection. This requires knowing the password — no tool can bypass a properly applied open password without it.
Privacy During Unlocking
Sensitive documents being unlocked never leave your browser. Processing uses WebAssembly in your browser tab — important since the documents you're unlocking often contain the sensitive content you were originally trying to protect.
After Unlocking
Unrestricted PDFs can be split, compressed, or re-protected with a new password. If you want to apply different restrictions, unlock first then re-protect with the desired settings.
