PDF Headers and Footers Different on Odd and Even Pages After Editing
PDF header and footer text that changes between odd and even pages after adding headers in a PDF tool is caused by different header fields defined for left and right pages. Here's how to make them consistent.
Adding a header or footer in Acrobat or a PDF editor and finding that the text appears on some pages but not others, or shows different content on odd vs even pages, is caused by the header/footer being configured with a "different odd and even pages" setting — mirroring the behavior of word processors that use different headers for left-hand and right-hand book pages.
Check Acrobat's Header/Footer Settings
In Acrobat Pro: Tools → Edit PDF → Header & Footer → Update. Look for "Alternate between odd and even pages" or separate sections labeled "Odd Pages" and "Even Pages." If these are set differently, odd and even pages show different content. To make all pages identical: copy the desired header/footer content to both the odd and even sections, or turn off the alternating option if present. Click Update All to apply uniformly.
Source Document Had Mirrored Headers
If the PDF was exported from Word or LibreOffice with "Different odd and even page headers" enabled in the source document, the header content is baked into the page content at different positions on odd and even pages. You cannot change this through a PDF header/footer tool — the difference is in the page content itself, not in a separate header layer. To fix it uniformly: go back to the source document, disable mirrored headers (Layout → in the Header & Footer section uncheck "Different Odd & Even Pages"), and re-export the PDF.
Applying Headers to Page Ranges
If the goal is to add a consistent header to all pages (or a specific range): in Acrobat Pro, Tools → Edit PDF → Header & Footer → Add. In the dialog, configure one header style and check "Page Range Options" → set to "All pages" or the specific range you need. Make sure "Alternate" is unchecked. Enter identical content in all text boxes. Preview shows how it will look before applying. For page numbering, use the auto-number placeholder (&p for current page, &P for total pages) rather than typing numbers manually.
