How to Redact a PDF on Mac for Free

Permanently remove sensitive information from PDFs on Mac without Adobe Acrobat. Preview cannot redact — use FixMyPDF instead.

Preview on Mac can add a black annotation box over text, but this does not properly redact — the underlying text remains in the PDF file. For true redaction on Mac, use FixMyPDF in Safari or Chrome.

Why Preview Cannot Redact

Preview's annotation tools add a black box as a visual overlay. The original text layer is untouched. Opening the PDF in TextEdit or copying all text retrieves the "hidden" content. This is a common mistake that has caused serious confidentiality breaches.

Proper Redaction on Mac

Open Safari or Chrome on Mac. Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/redact. Upload the PDF. Mark the areas to redact. Apply — the underlying content is deleted, not just covered. Download.

Test After Redacting

Open the downloaded PDF in Preview. Try selecting all text (Cmd+A) and copying (Cmd+C). Paste into TextEdit. The redacted areas should have no text content.

For Law Firms on Mac

Legal professionals on Mac frequently need to redact client names, case numbers, or privileged content before court filing or discovery. FixMyPDF provides a free, private redaction solution — no upload to third-party servers.
