How to Invert PDF Colors on iPhone (Dark Mode PDF)

Create a permanent dark mode PDF on iPhone in Safari — no app needed. Invert colors for comfortable night reading on iPhone and iPad.

iOS has a "Smart Invert" accessibility feature that inverts colors on screen — but it often inverts images incorrectly and doesn't save to the PDF. FixMyPDF creates a properly inverted dark mode PDF in Safari on iPhone that you can save and read in any app.

Open Safari and Go to the Inverter

Open Safari on your iPhone and navigate to fixmypdf.in/tools/invert-pdf. The tool is mobile-optimised with large touch targets. Tap "Select PDF" to choose your file from the Files app.

Why iOS Smart Invert Isn't Enough

iOS's Smart Invert (in Accessibility settings) inverts most of the screen but attempts to exclude photos and videos — this means PDF images get inverted inconsistently. It also only applies to your iPhone's display, not to the PDF file. Share the PDF and the recipient sees the original white version.

How the Inversion Works on iPhone

Our tool uses the iPhone's browser (Safari/Chrome) Canvas API to render each PDF page at high resolution, then inverts every pixel mathematically (new value = 255 − original value). The result is assembled into a new PDF and downloaded. Processing happens entirely in your iPhone's browser.

Performance on iPhone

A 10-page text PDF takes 15–30 seconds to invert on a modern iPhone (A15 chip or newer). Longer documents (50+ pages) may take a minute or two. The browser tab needs to stay active — don't switch to another app during processing or the browser may pause the work.

Saving the Dark Mode PDF on iPhone

When download completes, Safari saves the file to your Downloads folder. Open Files → Browse → Downloads → tap the dark mode PDF → tap Share to send via AirDrop, email, or save to iCloud Drive for reading in any PDF app.

Reading the Dark PDF in Books or PDF Expert

Import the inverted PDF into Apple Books (drag it into Books in iTunes on Mac, or open from Files → Share → Books on iPhone) for distraction-free dark mode reading. Or use PDF Expert, GoodReader, or any other PDF reader — the dark background is baked in and shows correctly in all apps.

For a simpler black-and-white conversion, try our B&W converter on iPhone. To flip pages that scanned sideways, use the rotation tool. All tools work in Safari without any app download.
