How to Invert PDF Colors on Mac (Dark Mode PDF)

Create a dark mode version of any PDF on Mac in Safari or Chrome — no app required. Invert colors permanently for easier night reading.

macOS has system-wide dark mode and Safari's reader mode supports night themes, but neither permanently inverts a PDF file. FixMyPDF's PDF inverter runs in Safari or Chrome on Mac and saves the dark mode version as a new PDF file you can share or read anywhere.

Open the Inverter in Your Mac Browser

Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/invert-pdf in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on your Mac. Upload your PDF by dragging from Finder or clicking "Select PDF". The tool loads the PDF for processing entirely on your Mac.

Why macOS Dark Mode Doesn't Affect PDFs

macOS's system dark mode changes the UI of apps — menus, windows, toolbars — but PDF content itself is not affected. Even in dark mode, a PDF with a white background will show a white background because that's the PDF's content. Only a pixel-level inversion of the PDF itself creates a true dark document.

Click Invert and Download

Click "Invert PDF Colors" and wait for processing. For a 20-page PDF on a modern Mac, this typically takes 5–10 seconds. The inverted PDF downloads to your Downloads folder. Open it in Preview — you'll see black backgrounds and white text.

The Inverted PDF Works Everywhere

Share the dark mode PDF with Windows users, Android users, or anyone — they'll see the same black background in any PDF viewer, because the inversion is in the file itself, not an app preference. It's permanently dark regardless of the viewer's settings.

Quality on Mac's Retina Display

The inversion is rendered at high resolution to support Retina displays. Text and images remain crisp when zoomed on MacBook Pro and iMac Retina screens. The rendering DPI is set to match the quality expected for high-density displays.

Privacy on Mac

Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser — not sent to FixMyPDF servers. On Mac, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all support the HTML5 Canvas API used for the pixel-level inversion. Processing happens using your Mac's GPU for fast rendering.
