What Is a PDF Portfolio? Multiple Files in One PDF

A PDF Portfolio (formerly PDF Package) bundles multiple files — PDFs, spreadsheets, images — into a single PDF container. Learn how they work and when to use them.

A PDF Portfolio is a PDF file that acts as a container for multiple other files — other PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, images, or any other file type. Unlike merging, which flattens everything into a single continuous PDF, a Portfolio keeps each component file independent and fully editable in its original format. Adobe Acrobat Pro can create and manage PDF Portfolios; the .pdf extension is the same.

How a PDF Portfolio Differs From a Merged PDF

When you merge PDFs, the pages from all files are combined into a single linear PDF — the result is one document with all pages in sequence. A Portfolio, by contrast, embeds the original files as attachments within a PDF shell. Opening a Portfolio in Acrobat shows a navigation interface; clicking a component file opens it in its native format (Word opens the .docx directly, etc.). The Portfolio is essentially a formatted ZIP file with a PDF navigation layer.

Use Cases for PDF Portfolios

  • Legal case files: combining pleadings (PDF), exhibits (images), contracts (Word), and spreadsheets (Excel) into one deliverable
  • Design proposals: a cover PDF with embedded InDesign files, images, and font assets
  • Financial reporting: a summary PDF portfolio containing individual fund reports, spreadsheets, and charts
  • Technical documentation: manuals with embedded CAD files, parts lists, and reference PDFs

Compatibility Limitations

PDF Portfolios are primarily an Adobe Acrobat feature. Most non-Acrobat PDF viewers (browsers, macOS Preview, most mobile apps) will either show only the Portfolio's cover page or list the embedded files without the full navigation interface. Recipients need Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro to fully interact with a Portfolio. For broad compatibility, merging or a regular ZIP file is often more practical.

How to Create a PDF Portfolio

In Adobe Acrobat Pro: File → Create → PDF Portfolio. Drag in the files you want to include. You can choose a layout theme and customize the welcome screen and header. Acrobat creates a PDF file that contains all the component files as embedded file streams, plus a PDF navigator page. The resulting file can be emailed, shared, or archived like any PDF.
