Why Writers Use PDF Watermarks

Tracking Which Beta Reader Has Which Copy
Create individual versions: watermark one copy "Beta Reader: Alex", another "Beta Reader: Sam". If an excerpt leaks, you can identify which reader's copy it came from. This is standard practice in the film industry (canary traps) and increasingly used by novelists.
Watermarking Screen Versions vs Print Versions
Create two versions: a lightly watermarked screen PDF for email sharing (easier to read), and a more prominently watermarked print version. Send the screen version to readers and use the print version only for in-person workshops.
