How to Create a Booklet PDF — Print-Ready Saddle-Stitch Layout

Create a booklet-format PDF for saddle-stitch printing. Rearrange pages into booklet order for folded A5 booklet from A4 sheets.

A booklet PDF rearranges pages into printing order for saddle-stitch binding — fold and staple A4 sheets in half to create an A5 booklet. FixMyPDF's Booklet PDF tool handles the page imposition automatically.

What Booklet Imposition Means

In a 16-page booklet, page 16 and page 1 print on the outer sheet (outside: 16, inside: 1). Pages 15 and 2 print on the next sheet, and so on. This specific arrangement is called "imposition" — getting the right pages on each side of each physical sheet.

How to Create a Booklet PDF

Go to fixmypdf.in/tools/booklet-pdf. Upload your PDF (must have a page count divisible by 4 for perfect booklet layout; blank pages are added otherwise). Click "Create Booklet". Download the imposed PDF. Print duplex (both sides) with long-edge binding.

Page Count Requirements

Booklets require page counts divisible by 4 (4, 8, 12, 16, 20 ...). If your document has 14 pages, the tool adds 2 blank pages to make 16. If it has 17 pages, 3 blank pages are added to make 20. Always check total pages before imposing.

Printing Settings for Booklet Output

When printing the booklet PDF, use: duplex printing enabled, "flip on long edge" (not short edge), and print in booklet page order (the tool already handles this — just print pages in sequence). After printing, fold all sheets together and staple in the spine.

A4 to A5 Booklet

A standard A4 PDF becomes an A5 booklet when printed booklet-style: each A4 sheet folds to create two A5 pages. For an A4 booklet from A3 sheets, set the source PDF page size to A4 and print on A3.

Creating Booklets for Events, Zines, and Programmes

Concert programmes, product catalogues, event guides, and zines are all typically saddle-stitched booklets. Design your content in an A5 or A6 format PDF with the correct page count, then impose with FixMyPDF before sending to a printer or printing in-house.

After Printing and Folding

Stack all printed sheets together in order. Fold along the spine. Staple twice along the fold line for saddle-stitch binding. Trim the open edges with a guillotine for a clean finish if needed.
